It is said to have been founded by the monk Gyoji Bosatsu by imperial decree of Emperor Shomu. It was revived during the Genwa period (1615–1624 CE) in the Edo period. During the Edo period, it housed one of the Six Jizo of Edo, and it is said that Tokugawa Yoshimune visited frequently.
