Founded in 1730 CE (Kyoho 15) by Shinnyo, the 17th abbot of Higashi Hongan-ji. Construction was approved as the site of the exile of Shinran, the founder of the Jodo Shinshu sect, due to strong requests from followers and a petition to the shogunate. In 1876 CE (Meiji 9), it was renamed Takada Betsuin and took charge of managing the affiliated temples in the Katsuragawa region.
