During the Karyō period (1338–1339 CE), Ashikaga Motouji received the temple name from the Sanbō-in Monzeki (head priestage) of Daigo-ji and founded the temple on the thatched ramparts of Nakamura Castle. Around 1546–1555 CE (Tenshō 15–24), Nakamura Tokinaga became the restorer and founder, relocating the temple to the vicinity of its current location. It was rebuilt on its present site during the Tenshō period (1573–1592 CE).
