History
The main shrine was originally enshrined in Nagabukuro, Fukuoka Village, where the Upper and Lower Shimei Shrines stood separately. In 1599 (Keicho 4), when Date Masamune attacked and captured Shiraishi Castle, this castle site was granted to Katakurayama Kojuro in recognition of his merit as the vanguard. The shrine was re-established in 1877 (Meiji 10), and between 1909 (Meiji 42) and 1914 (Taisho 3), five shrines were merged into it.
