History
Construction of Shirakawa Miya began during the turbulent Bakumatsu period by order of Emperor Komei to transfer the spirit of Emperor Sutoku to Kyoto. The shrine was officially founded by decree of Emperor Meiji. In 1873, the spirit of Emperor Junnin was welcomed from Awaji Island and jointly enshrined. In 1940, it was elevated to the rank of Kanpei Taisha (Grand Shrine of First Rank) and renamed Shirakawa Jingu. It is currently listed as a special shrine under the Association of Shinto Shrines.
