The shrine was founded when Asamune-no-Mikoto enshrined Kaganatsuhime-no-Kami to aid his wife who was suffering from a difficult childbirth. It has been venerated as a guardian deity for women since ancient times. In the first year of the Gengen era (877 CE), it was granted the rank of Junior Fifth Rank, Lower Grade. It was promoted to a Gōsha (village shrine) in 1874 (Meiji 7) and to a Kenisha (prefectural shrine) in 1935 (Shōwa 10).
