It is said that in 951 CE, Genbu Daisai Ryogen divided the spirit of Shirasu Shrine in Shiga Prefecture and enshrined it in this location. In 1907, the southern Suwa Shrine was merged into this shrine, and in 1992, the shrine was rebuilt after being completely destroyed by an arson fire.
