The temple's origins are said to trace back to a hermitage established by the monk Chi-i in 754 CE (Tenpyo Shoho 6). It was later formalized as a sub-temple (tato) of Ohtani-ji by the monk Saicho. During the Koun era, the monk Kukai visited the temple and carved the principal image of the Three-Faced Thousand-Armed Kannon. Although the temple was destroyed by fire during the Onin War, it was rebuilt and renamed Shoboji in 1615 CE (Genwa 1). Since then, it has served as a place of prayer for successive generations of the Tokugawa shogunate.
