Originally of the Soto sect, the temple switched to the Obaku sect during the Meiji era. There are various theories regarding its founding, including one that it was built in 1697 CE (Genroku 10) by Tada-ki, the head of the Maebashi Domain and a court musician, and another that in 1722 CE (Kyo-ho 7), at the earnest request of Tada-tomi, a court musician, it was established as a place for prayers for the protection of the nation and the longevity of military fortune. Because most of the old documents were destroyed in a fire in 1881, the details of its founding are unknown.
