Founded in 751 CE (Tenpyou Shohou 3) by the monk Shouraku, a devoted attendant of Prince Wakukou of Goryeo, to pray for the soul of the prince who died while developing the local area. It is said that the temple's principal image is a statue of Shouten (Vaiśravaṇa), the guardian deity of Prince Wakukou.
