The Three Sumiyoshi Deities
History
In the Engishiki (a 10th-century codex), it was referred to as Sugata Shrine and was originally located in the Minagaki area of the Sugata district. It later became a divine estate (shinryō) of Sumiyoshi Taisha (Sumiyoshi Grand Shrine) in Settsu, enshrined the three deities of Sumiyoshi, and was renamed Sumiyoshi Shrine. It was relocated to its current site during the Hoan era (1120–1123 CE) and was designated as a village shrine (mura-ya) in 1874 (Meiji 7).
