Founded in 1335 CE as Ryuho-ji by Kira Haruke or Kira Yoritsune. In 1573 CE, it was revived by inviting the Soto Zen monk Ten'ei Rintatsu and renamed Shuko-in after the dharma name of Kira Yoritsune. It was considered the most prestigious temple in the former Kira clan domain, having received land grants from Tokugawa Ieyasu.
