Established in 1590 CE (Tensho 18) by Hori Yoshiharu to mourn the soul of his eldest son, Hori Kinsuke, who died in the Battle of Odawara. It was originally named Shungan-in. Later, Ishikawa Noriyuki became a patron (dangaku), and in 1636 CE (Kan'ei 13), the temple was renamed Shunkoin.
