建武2年、三河国衣城主の中条秀長が太陽義冲を招聘して菩提寺として創建した。室町時代中期に衰退し、永禄10年には織田信長の兵火によって焼失したが、天正11年に余語正勝によって再興された。元禄年間には本堂と庫裏を重建し、現本堂は昭和50年代に再建された。
