Sofukuji
仙台市青葉区北山1丁目13−1
One of the five Zen temples known as the Kitayama Gosan (Five Mountains of Kitayama) located in Kitayama, Sendai. It is a temple of the Myoshin-ji sect of the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism and is also famous as a renowned spot for hydrangeas, often referred to as the 'Hydrangea Temple.'
History
Founded in Yamagata Prefecture during the Kōan period of the Kamakura era by Nagai Tokihide. During the Northern and Southern Courts period, it received protection from the Date clan. In the Sengoku period, Date Terumune invited a resident priest to oversee the education of Date Masamune. The temple subsequently relocated to Iwadeyama in 1591 (Tenshō 19), to Tani-kōji in Sendai in 1600 (Keichō 5), and to its current location in 1638 (Kan'ei 15).

What visitors say
Known as the 'Hydrangea Temple,' it features approximately 1,000 hydrangea plants in full bloom from mid-June to early July. The grounds include bamboo groves and stone-paved pathways, creating a serene atmosphere that harmonizes with the fresh greenery. Visitors should exercise caution as the road to the parking lot is narrow. The temple grounds can be explored in about 30 minutes, and a statue of Ninomiya Sakuzaemon is also installed on site.
