Before its founding, Ueno Castle, ruled by Chiba Tadayoshi, stood on this site. The shrine was established under the protection of the Chiba clan after the castle was abandoned. It is believed to have been a branch shrine of Soba-taka Daimyojin, which the Chiba clan worshipped at the demon gate (kimon) of their residence. It was founded in 1576 CE (Tensho 4).
