Sokugawa Shrine (Sokugawa-watasu Okami-miko Shrine)

奈良市本子守町18

👶 Children & safe birth🏥 Health

This is a satellite shrine outside the precincts of Omiwa Shrine, officially named Sokugawa-watasu Okami-miko Shrine. It has long been revered as 'Komorebi Myojin' (Child-Guarding Deity) and attracts strong devotion as a god of safe childbirth and child-rearing.

History

It is said that in the first year of Empress Suiko (593 CE), Otoshiro no Kimi Shirakizaki enshrined Hime-Tatara-Isuzu-hime-no-Mikoto as the deity by imperial command, making it the oldest shrine in Nara City. During the reign of Empress Genmei, the parent deities Sai Okami and Tamakushi-hime-no-Mikoto were also enshrined. The shrine buildings were destroyed in the Burning of Nanto in the fourth year of Jisho (1180 CE), but were rebuilt in the first year of Kenkyu (1190 CE) with support from Kofuku-ji Temple, after which the shrine came under the control of Kofuku-ji.

What visitors say

Located near Sanjo-dori Street, this shrine offers a quiet atmosphere despite being in the city center. The layout of the shrine buildings is unique, characterized by a configuration where supporting structures flank the main enshrined deity. In June, the 'Sanedai Matsuri' (Yuri Festival) is held, featuring colorful processions parading through the city. Since access by car requires navigating narrow alleys, using nearby coin-operated parking lots is convenient.
