Founded during the Kenkyu era (1190–1199 CE) by the monk Jonyu. Takeda Shigechika, a vassal of Minamoto no Yoritomo, organized the various halls, and the temple's name derives from Shigechika's posthumous name. It flourished under the protection of the Hojo clan and the Edo shogunate, but was completely destroyed by fire in 1898 and has since been rebuilt multiple times.
