It began as a small hall founded by Kukai in 808 CE (Doto 3). It is said to have been named Someiden-in and to offer the benefit of safe childbirth because Someiden, a consort of Emperor Unten, prayed to Jizo Bosatsu (the Bodhisattva of Compassion) and gave birth to Emperor Saga. In the early Muromachi period, Ashikaga Yoshimitsu donated it to Konren-ji of the Jodo Shinshu sect, and it became a sub-temple.
