This site is where Honen first preached the teachings of nembutsu. Its origins lie in the construction of the Nenbutsu Sanmai-do (Hall of Nembutsu Meditation) by his disciple Rensei. During the Karyoku Persecution, Honen's remains were transferred to this temple. Subsequently, Emperor Go-Tsuchimikado bestowed the imperial title 'Komyoji' (Temple of Bright Light). In the fourth year of Keian (1651 CE), the temple was revived by Baizan Shun'i, who oversaw the reconstruction of the monastic complex and the restoration of the associated academy.
