Sugao Ishibe Shrine, Shinto Gate

According to tradition, the shrine's origins date back to 585 CE (Yomei 1), when the deity Sugao Ishibe Kami, who had been enshrined in the imperial court, was invited to this location during an epidemic. In 940 CE (Tenkyo 3), the shrine was granted the rank of Junior Fourth Rank, Lower Grade. It was elevated to a Kokhei Shosha (Minor State Shrine) in 1896 (Meiji 29). During the medieval period, it served as a shrine estate under Kitano Tenmangu, a legacy reflected in its common name 'Tenjin' and the statues of oxen found within the precincts.
