History

The shrine's origins are said to date back to the Eiroku period, when it was established by request of Nagamasa, the samurai and lord of Matsune Castle. Originally known as Tenmangu, it was enshrined at a location called Tohoku Issan, one ri northeast of Matsune-machi. During the Genroku period, the urban and rural areas of Matsune-machi were separated, and the shrine was relocated to the eastern edge of the farmer's town in Higashi-gakiuchi.
