Old records state that the shrine was founded during the Meitoku era (1390-1394) with the involvement of Kanazawa Kunimitsu, the 17th generation of the Kaji family. It was revived by Shimazu Yoshihiro during the Ten'ō era (835-841) and rebuilt the year after a fire in the 12th year of Genroku (1699). The shrine was destroyed by war damage in 1945 (Shōwa 20) but was restored within the same year. Since then, various renovations and expansions have been carried out.
