History
The grounds of the shrine are said to have been the location of the Sugawara-in, the residence of Sugawara no Michizane and his descendants for three generations, starting from his grandfather Sugawara no Kiyofumi. It is also traditionally regarded as Michizane's birthplace. Originally, the halls of the Kan'kiji Temple, which was established to honor the souls of Michizane and his family, were utilized. A new shrine building was constructed to enshrine Michizane, along with his father, Sugawara no Yoshifusa, and his grandfather, Sugawara no Kiyofumi. During the Meiji Era, the shrine was classified as a village shrine (Musha).
