A Tendaishu (Tendai) Buddhist temple located in Himeji City, with the mountain name (sangou) of Masuizayama. It is counted as one of the Six Mountains of Tendaishu in Harima, and is also the 4th station of the Harima Saikoku 33 Pilgrimage and the 15th station of the Harishu Yakushi Pilgrimage.
History
Its predecessor is said to be Masuidera, which was established by order of Prince Shotoku, and was later revived by the monk Giki. In 834 CE (Jowa 1), it became a Tendaishu temple by order of Emperor Ninmyo, and in 849 CE (Kajō 2), it was granted the temple name 'Suigenji'. The entire mountain complex burned down in the late medieval period, but it was rebuilt on the original site in 1586 CE (Tenshō 14). The current main hall was reconstructed in 1666 CE (Kanbun 6) by Sakakibara Tadakatsu.
