History
The shrine's origins date back to Tenpo 10 (1839 CE), when Hiranuma Kyubei established the enshrinement. In Bunkyu 3 (1863 CE), it was relocated to its current site. According to shrine tradition, villagers found a small shrine (Hokora) in a bay and brought it ashore, interpreting this event as a divine revelation to enshrine a guardian deity. Because a sacred tablet (Shinbutsu) from Suitengu in Kurume, Chikugo Province, was enshrined there, it was named 'Suitengu'. Although it was renamed 'Hiranuma Shrine' under the Meiji government's shrine ranking system, it continues to be called 'Suitengu Hiranuma Shrine' today.
