Founded by the monk Giki during the Tenpyo era (729-749 CE), it was originally a Hosso sect temple. In 1442 CE (Kakitsu 2), Hosokawa Motokata enshrined the head of Ashikaga Yoshimasa and converted the temple to the Soto Zen sect, leading to its revival. It later became the memorial temple for Hosokawa Gracia. Within the temple grounds, the head mound of Ashikaga Yoshimasa and the grave of Gracia remain.
