The shrine is said to have originated as the tutelary deity (Jinju) when Kukai founded Myo-o-in Temple in 807 CE during the Heian period. Originally a small shrine situated on an islet in the Ashida River, it was swept away by a flood and later rebuilt in 1633 by Mizuno Katsunari, the first feudal lord of the Fukuyama Domain. In 1655, Mizuno Katsusada relocated the shrine to its current grounds.
