The shrine's origins date back to 1733, when it was established following a proposal by Kishoku Kaien, a monk of the Shingon sect of Buddhism, who invited the three deities of Sumiyoshi and two subsidiary deities to be enshrined. In 1799, the shrine suffered damage from a major fire and was relocated to its current site. After World War II, it became independent from the Karakawa Inari Shrine. The current shrine buildings were completed in 1996.
