After being destroyed by a mudslide and flood in 952 CE (Tenryaku 2), it received the deity of Sumiyoshi Daimyojin from Toyoura in Chogen Province and was relocated to its current site, where it was renamed Sumiyoshi Shrine. In 1912 CE (Meiji 45), the Daiyashira Muzoku Shrine was merged into it.
