During the Edo period, it was known as Komori Daimyojin (Great Shrine of the Guardian of Children) and received the reverence of the feudal lords of the Sumomomi Domain. In 1871 CE (Meiji 4), it was renamed Sumomomi Shrine and was designated as a provincial shrine (kenja) and a local shrine (kyousha) at different times.
