Legend holds that a branch spirit was enshrined here from Tsushima Ushitora Tenno-sha in the 11th year of the Jogan era (869 CE), during the reign of Emperor Seia. During the Sengoku period, warlords such as the Takeda and Uesugi clans visited to pray for military success. In the Edo period, the shrine received land grants from Tokugawa Iemitsu. Following the separation of Shinto and Buddhism in the early Meiji period, the enshrined deity was changed to Susanoo-no-Mikoto, and the name was changed from 'Tenno-gu' to 'Susao Shrine'.
