The shrine was established in 1698 CE (Genroku 11) to enshrine Gozu Tennō (the Bull-Head Heavenly King) in connection with the development of Morita Shinden (Morita New Field) in the 10th plot of Higashiura, Takashi Village. In 1870 CE (Meiji 3), Susuo-no-Mikoto was adopted as the enshrined deity, and the shrine was renamed Susuo Shrine. Between 1908 CE (Meiji 41) and 1919 CE (Taishō 8), the shrine relocated to its current location in Minami-kae-machi to avoid dangers associated with land acquisition and the construction of a gunpowder magazine. In 1965 CE (Shōwa 40), the former worship hall (Haiden) of Hata Hachimangū (Hata Hachiman Grand Shrine) was relocated and erected here. Today, it is revered as the tutelary deity of four districts.
