It was formerly composed of two separate shrines, the Suwa Otamiya (Male Body Shrine) and the Suwa Mesamiya (Female Body Shrine), earning it the nickname 'Futatsu-miya no Suwa Shrine' (Suwa Shrine of Two Palaces). Following the merger of shrines in 1908 CE (Taisho 7), the Mesamiya was merged into the main site, and today only the Otamiya remains as Suwa Shrine.
