During the medieval period, it was worshipped as a god of war, and a Daishinbo-shi (high-ranking priestly envoy) was dispatched as one of the Six Shrines of the Tokaido Road. The shrine was destroyed by fire in 1571 during Oda Nobunaga's pacification campaigns but was rebuilt in 1605 by Honda Tadakatsu.
