The shrine was founded in 782 CE by Moribekko Kimihiko Masamasa, a priest of Atsuta Jingu. During the Enkyu era (1121–1126 CE), the nineteenth-generation descendant of the Moribekko family, Hikosada, invited the enshrined deity of Hachiman Shrine to be enshrined here. The Moribekko family are descendants of Ooi-no-Mikoto and served Atsuta Jingu in shrine offices for generations until the fourth year of the Meiji era (1871 CE).
