In 1773 CE (An'ei 2), Tsuwano Domain Lord Kamei Masamune received a branch enshrinement from Fushimi Inari Taisha (Fushimi Inari Grand Shrine) and established the shrine on the peak of Taiko-dani, which corresponds to the demon gate (kimon) of Tsuwano Castle. In 1867 CE (Kei'ō 3), Kumano Gongen Shrine was relocated here, and the shrine name became Kumano Shrine. In 1927 CE (Shōwa 2), it was renamed Inari Shrine. It is said that the kanji used for the name were changed to "Inari" (rice + become) to express the wish that prayers would be granted.
