Taikudani Inari Shrine, Meifu Shrine

津和野町後田

Located on a corner of the castle hill of Tsuwano Castle, this shrine is known as "Tsuwano's Inari Shrine" for its approach lined with approximately 1,000 vermilion-painted donated torii gates.

History

In 1773, Kamei Masasada, the lord of the Tsuwano Domain, received a transfer of the deity from Fushimi Inari Taisha (Fushimi Inari Grand Shrine) and established the shrine on the peak of Taikudani, which corresponds to the evil direction (kimon) of Tsuwano Castle. In 1867 (Keiō 3), the Kumano Gongen Shrine was transferred here, and the shrine name became Kumano Shrine. In 1927, it was renamed to the current Inari Shrine. It is said that the name was written as "Inari" (meaning rice harvest) to express the wish for prayers to be granted.
