Tairyu-ji

日本、〒771-5173 徳島県阿南市加茂町竜山 龍山2

4.5(914)

A temple of the Koyasan Shingon sect, Tairyu-ji is the 21st station of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage and the 10th station of the Awa Chichibu Kannon Pilgrimage. Its mountain name is Shashin-yama, and its temple name is Joju-in. It is also known by the alternate name 'Koya of the West.'

History

In 793 CE (Enryaku 12), Fujiwara no Myozan established the temple complex by imperial decree from Emperor Kanmu. It is said that Kukai enshrined statues such as that of Kongo Yozoku Bosatsu (Vajrapani Bodhisattva). The temple was later revived by Choho of Toji-ji on the orders of Emperor Shirakawa. After being destroyed by fire during the wars of the Chosokabe clan, it was rebuilt under the protection of the Hachisuka clan. Although the temple faced hardship in the post-war period, it experienced a resurgence following the opening of a ropeway in 1992 and the popularity of the pilgrimage boom.

What visitors say

Located in a deep mountainous area, the temple exudes a mysterious and tranquil atmosphere. Using the ropeway allows visitors to worship in a short time while enjoying views of the Naka River and the surrounding mountains. Access by car is difficult due to steep mountain roads, and the parking lot is integrated with a roadside station (Michi-no-Eki). Goshuin (temple seal stamps) can be obtained at the scripture registration office in the main hall.
