According to temple tradition, it was founded by Prince Shotoku. During the Jogan era, it became an outer temple of Katsuo-ji, where Emperor Saga had once resided in seclusion. The temple was destroyed by fire during the Onin War but was rebuilt in 1649 CE (Keian 2) by the monk Shuei.
