History

Founded in 985 CE by Fujiwara no Sakyo Daiyu, who enshrined a branch spirit (bunrei) from Ishizumi Hachimangu (Ishizumi Hachiman Grand Shrine) at the command of Emperor Kazan. During the Former Nine Years' War, Minamoto no Yorimitsu and Minamoto no Yoritomo prayed for victory in battle. From the Kamakura period onward, it received the reverence of local lords, including the Sato clan. Under the modern shrine rank system established after the Meiji Restoration, it is the only Prefectural Shrine (Kensha) in Ibaraki Prefecture north of Hitachi.
