This ancient shrine is said to have been founded during the reign of Emperor Seimu and later had Emperor Ojin enshrined as a subsidiary deity during the reign of Emperor Seiwa. It was relocated to its current site during the transfer of the capital from Kiyosu Castle to Nagoya Castle. In the first year of the Meiji era (1868 CE), it was officially renamed Takamu Shrine. Although the shrine buildings were destroyed in air raids during World War II, they were rebuilt after the war.
