Founded in 810 CE by Kukai as a Shingon sect temple. It was destroyed by fire during military conflicts in 1187 and 1384, but was rebuilt with the support of Minamoto no Yoritomo and the protection of the Osawa clan. The temple was closed due to the Meiji government's order separating Shinto and Buddhism, but was revived in 1890 by inviting the abbot of Akiyama-ji and converting to the Soto sect.
