The shrine's origins are said to date back to the Oei period (1394–1427 CE), when Oe Bichu-no-kami Shishin, the lord of Katakura Castle, enshrined the deity of Musashi Ichinomiya Hikawa Shrine (Musashi First Shrine Hikawa Shrine). It was rebuilt in 1662 CE (Kanbun 2) and became the guardian deity of Takao. The current shrine buildings were newly constructed in 1952 CE (Shōwa 27).
