The founding date is unknown, but tradition holds that it began when Okuninushi-no-Mikoto settled his spirit in this land after pacifying the Hokuriku region. Under the Ritsuryo system, it held the highest rank as the Ichinomiya of Etchu Province. During the Edo period, it was generously protected under the reverence of the Maeda clan, lords of the Kaga Domain. In the Meiji era, it was designated as a Kensha (prefectural shrine), and in the Taisho era, it was classified as a Kokubei-sha (minor national shrine). It is currently listed as a Hyakubasho Jinja (special shrine) under the Association of Shinto Shrines.
