History
According to shrine tradition, it was founded in 703 CE (Hōki 3) by Tajima no Mahito, the pacification officer for the Tōsan Province. After the shrine buildings were destroyed by fire during the military campaigns of Uesugi Kenshin in 1574 CE (Tenshō 2), they were rebuilt in the Edo period in front of the main gate of Kiyose Castle. The deities were later transferred to the current location around 1627 CE (Kan'ei 4). The shrine serves as the head shrine for the Kuidzu Shrines distributed throughout the Gen-Arakawa River basin.
