👶 Children & safe birth

A temple of the Shugendo Tozan school located in Kochi City, Kochi Prefecture, and the 34th station of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage. Also known as Honozan or Suzaku-in, it is renowned as a temple for praying for safe childbirth.

History

It is said that the temple originated during the reign of Emperor Yomei, when a Buddhist sculptor from Baekje enshrined a statue of Yakushi Nyorai (Medicine Buddha) while praying for safe navigation. Later, during the Kounin era, Kukai built the main hall and established the temple, enshrining the Yakushi Nyorai statue carved by the sculptor as the principal image. The temple was closed in the 4th year of the Meiji era (1871) but was revived at its current location in the 13th year of the Meiji era (1880).
