Founded in 1199 by Nasu Mitsusuke to mourn the spirit of Nasu Yoichi. It was expanded in 1418 by Nasu Sushige and renamed Tenjiji in 1555 after the posthumous Buddhist name of Nasu Takamune. During the Edo period, it became the ancestral temple of the Uchiya Domain and was relocated to its current site in 1675.
