The exact date of founding is unknown, and the shrine's history is not clearly documented due to the loss of its sacred storehouse to fire. A petition from the Tenpō era mentions a dedication ceremony in the 4th year of the Kan'ei era (1627 CE), while a ledger from the early Meiji era records the founding in the 1st year of the Tenryaku era (951 CE). The shrine buildings were once washed away by a flood, and the deities were temporarily enshrined in another location before being returned to the original site, where they remain to this day.
