History
The shrine's origin is said to be a small shrine built by villagers when Sugawara no Michizane rested there in 901 CE (Engi 1). It is also said that Taira no Kiyomori established the main shrine buildings after being saved from a violent storm. In the early Edo period, the Asano clan relocated the shrine to its current location and named it 'Ochō Tenjin-gū'. After the Meiji Restoration, it was renamed 'Ochō Tenman-gū'. During the atomic bombing in 1945, the main buildings collapsed due to the blast but were spared from being burned down.
